Remix Trent for Free
On Friday Trent Reznor released a Nine Inch Nails tune in Apple Loop format. The single, “Hand That Feeds” is available in a limited license for non commerical, no redistribution, personal use using Apple’s Garageband 2. It’s not a full multitrack release (for example the drums are mixed to a stereo track) but it’s enough to practice a bit of mixing or remix Trent in your favorite musical style. It’s addicting, I’ve spent a nice chunk of the weekend tweaking on it brushing up and my Garageband chops.
It says it requires Garageband 2 but it will work on Garageband 1, you just need to dismiss some error dialogs as each track is initialized and loaded. Of course, you don’t get any of the cool new Garageband 2 features to tweak. I’ve been holding off on my upgrade as the entire suite of new iLife releases are going to be included in the new release of OS X, called “Tiger”, due in little less than two weeks. Saavy users have found the Amazon rebate for 35 bucks for orders prior to May 31st.
EDIT: William Mortensen commented that now the iLife bundle will not be shipping with Tiger, though my pals down that way say for the time being, iLife will still be bundled with hardware. Thanks for the heads up…..

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Dave, but it doesn’t look like Tiger will ship with any iLife apps besides iTunes (which is free anyway, of course). There’s a complete list of everything that ships with Tiger at (http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/), and none of the iLife apps appear to be on that list. (For a little historical perspective, Panther shipped with the then-current iMovie 3 and iPhoto 2, which were free downloads anyway, and that led many to believe that Tiger too would ship with the current iLife apps, minus iDVD and perhaps GarageBand. However, starting with iLife ‘04, all of the apps except iTunes have become available only by buying the whole shebang.)
However, you can get $38 off iLife ‘05, iWork, and Tiger through the end of May. Look for the iLife+iWork Savings on the online Apple Store (in the Tiger part of the left-hand sidebar).
I wanted this to be more than one giant paragraph, but I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to do line and/or paragraph breaks in Movable Type. Sorry…

Okay, I guess line breaks work, but they sure as hell don’t show up in the preview. WTF kind of preview is that????

Thanks for the heads up William. According to one who should know, iLife will be bundled with new hardware for at least the near future. I’d bet they keep bundling it with hardware, then using the upgrade revenue after they get you hooked with the hardware.
As for the preview, you’ll have to talk to Ben and Mena about that…
